Jan’s words

Why I am participating in this election to the European Parliament

I have watched with dismay the gradual erosion of civil liberties in the UK and in Europe; since 2001, the increase in the policing powers of the state and the accompanying marginalisation of ethnic communities.

I oppose the wastefulness of the European taxpayers’ monies, funding the purchase of banned weapons of war and financing rogue states via international institutions such as the IMF, in the name of preserving “financial stability”.

It is clear that EU and UK are not doing enough to oppose not only genocide, but also in areas related to torture and detention.

It seems that no lessons have been learned from Biafra, Rwanda and Srebrenica. These last few months have been a revelation.

Racism is on the rise in Europe and racist parties have a real chance of getting seats in London. We cannot leave matters in the hands of the established political parties.

As an independent candidate:
* I don’t have to follow any party politics
* I won’t be afraid to speak the truth
* I will be a catalyst for change
* I intend to make a difference.

On civil rights..

I have lived in countries with limited civil rights and in military dictatorships, including Sri Lanka and Nigeria. I hold the freedoms of Britain to be precious.
But I have watched with dismay the gradual erosion of civil liberties since 2001 and the increase in the powers of the state over the individual.
I oppose the trend towards increased surveillance and decreased privacy. I oppose the increased collection and storage of data on citizens by the state because I fear the day it will be misused.
I oppose the anti-terror laws on the basis that they are too broad and can be indiscriminately applied.  Any form of ‘political’ protest can now be caught under these laws – ranging from fox hunting protests to local opposition to the expansion of Heathrow airport. These laws are also disproportionally applied to ethnic communities.
Over the last two years I have researched and written on the phenomenon of genocide, in an attempt to prevent it in Sri Lanka. I now believe a genocide has happened there, and the international community has failed to prevent
it.
It is clear that when it comes to abiding by agreed international norms of behavior our governments cannot be depended on. This is not just with respect to genocide but also in areas such as torture and rendition and detention without trial.
In the last few months, I and many tens of thousands of other have tried to influence the British government and main political parties to do something tangible to stop the war in Sri Lanka. But we were unable to stop the forced starvation and aerial bombing of an entire people. We could not persuade our government to do air drops of food or to insist on delivery by ship. Nothing worked.
One cannot leave matters in the hands of the established political parties. As an independent candidate who is not afraid to tell the truth and to catalyse change, I intend to make a difference.

Vote for Jan and vote against the BNP. Vote for an ethical independent candidate and vote against ministerial abuse of expenses.

Jan is

* For strong civil rights and against the erosion of the freedom of individuals and communities
* For financial transparency and effective regulation
* For small business and entrepreneurship
* For an ethical foreign policy
* For diversity

On financial transparency and small business…

Financial transparency and effective regulation
We need more transparency and better regulation in areas from MPs expenses to the management of investments and pensions.

I have worked as a bond and derivatives trader and know first hand how financial crises are created, having survived a few of these. Bank management, regulators and legislators need to be more competent; there is a conflict of interest in the industry being allowed to self-regulate.

I oppose the lack of transparency of international institutions such as the IMF, which use taxpayers’ money to prop up failing governments and economies. I have helped to bring a legal injunction to prevent the IMF from lending to a recipient country that would use the funds to buy weapons of war and to commit crimes against humanity and/or genocide.

Small Business

I have run a small business and know first hand the issues faced by entrepreneurs. I know that cash flow is king and in this credit crunch environment would work to alleviate cash flow problems and improve the availability of credit for small business owners. I support micro-finance initiatives and in government support for ‘business angels’ and venture capital for start ups, so as to encourage entrepreneurial efforts.

I know that small businesses, especially those involved in cross-border trade, can be overwhelmed by local reporting and regulatory complexities, and by variations in employment law and would wish to simplify the environment.

I as a Gujarati Asian am so happy and overjoyed that a young Asian is participating in politics with a vedically compatible stance of dharma, i.e. the protection of the weak etc.
I am particularly encouraged as an ex East African Asian because we did not participate in politics in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania with bad consequences
I as an Indian am thoroughly ashamed by the behavior of the present Indian administration in arming the Rajapakse establishment (dodgeily elected like his guru G. Bush jnr.) which is carrying out this genocide.
As a person who admires Gandhi I feel so sad that us Indians have the blood of our Tamil brothers, Sisters and Children (some even unborn) ON OUR HANDS. The present Indian government seems to be flirting with China, Pakistan etc as well as ignoring the fact that IPKF killed so many Tamils , it is almost as if they are taking revenge for Rajiv Gandhi who incidentally allowed so many Sikhs to die in Delhi after Indira Gandhi’s death and then later used Sikhs soldiers to kill Tamils in Sri Lanka
I was so gladdened and impressed in the way you handled the interview on Al Jazeera.
You are so right to say that we will only find out the true extent of the genocide after it is over.
India is an appeaser of the kind described by Winston Churchill i.e. “AN APPEASER IS ONE WHO FEEDS CROCODILES HOPING HE WILL BE THE LAST MEAL FOR THE CROCODILE “.
It is urgent that we have a voice in the EU so that countries like Slovakia do not supply ordnance to Sri Lanka.
I pray to god you win a seat, and I have full confidence you will be an excellent all round MEP.

2.9% of Londoners voted for you! That’s a great share of the vote, Jan. So close to winning a seat, I think you should be very proud.

How about the Westminster elections (if we ever have one…)?

    Very best regards,

    Jay Blanche
